The Pursuit of Happiness 11/18/2010
![]() Choose carefully when considering a partner, whether to go to the cinema, restaurant and how you look after your physical well being. These choices may have a significant effect on your overall life fulfilment. That's according to a study that defies the theory that life happiness is mainly predetermined by your genetic code. The broadly acknowledged "set-point" hypothesis of happiness states that a person's long-term happiness tends to be steady because it is reliant mainly on genetic causes. The idea is based partly on studies that show identical twins have more similar levels of life contentment than non identical twins. This implies that although your level of happiness may sporadically be thrown off by major life events, it will always return to a main set level within 2 years. Bruce Headey at the University of Melbourne in Australia wanted to discover if people really are pre destined for a certain amount of happiness and his team queried people in Germany about their lifestyles, careers and social and religious activities. The survey was first completed by 3000 people a year, and that rose to 60,000 per year by the end of the 25-year study. They found that evident changes in lifestyle resulted in sizeable long-term changes in reported life fulfilment, as opposed to causing the momentary changes in happiness that set-point theory had suggested. One of the greatest influences on a person's happiness was their partner's amount of neuroticism. Those that had partners who scored greatly on tests for neuroticism were more prone to be unhappy – and shown to stay unhappy for as long as the relationship existed. Family values and altruism also predisposed lasting happiness. Those whose yearly survey responses altered to place a higher priority on altruistic habits and family goals were rewarded with a long-term increase in life fulfilment. Those who had a priority of career and material success, experienced a corresponding long-term decline in happiness. The pursuit of happiness was also helped in having strong religious or spiritual convictions. "People who attend church regularly seem to be happier than people who are not religious," says Headey. A person's body weight was another factor for long-term happiness, notably for women. Underweight men scored slightly lower than those with healthy weights, while women stated being considerably less happy when they were obese. Being overweight seemed to have no effect on men's happiness. Robert Cummins at Deakin University in Burwood, Australia, notes that changes in happiness reported by Headey's team could be influenced by individuals falling into or recovering from depression. The group advises its findings may be useful to other populations, having found comparable patterns, as yet unpublished, in the UK and Australia. How is your pursuit of happiness? ![]() There are new atomic clock experiments showing that the pace of time changes at normal speeds and heights – for example, riding a bicycle or climbing up on a step ladder! I always thought time was bendable.. mutable. I remember travelling from Holland and arriving the same time I left and wondering where the hour in the air went? Einstein's relativity theory annihilated the idea that time runs at the same rate for everyone, everywhere in our universe. Time actually slows down in a gravitational field, making clocks run a bit slower on our Earth's surface then they do in deep space. If you hold a Theta brainwave your perception of time ‘bends’. Similar to deep meditation you can feel as if time stops or becomes intensely packed with information within 15- 60 seconds. Einsteins theory also predicts time is changed by velocity differences between observers. In Theta Healing we’ve known how you observe or perceive a thing is going to change your life. Which brings me onto the strangely named twin paradox. A twin returning from a journey in a fast-moving spacecraft will have aged much less then the twin who remained at home. We also know that the observer changes the observed. How you perceive an object or a living being changes them. This is why in Theta Healing it’s so important how you perceive your self, your life, others around you and what your beliefs hold to be true for you. Time effects have been demonstrated in numerous experiments, including one that sent atomic clocks flying in airplanes and showed they fell behind the clocks that stayed on the ground, because of the difference in velocity. Another showed that an atomic clock slowed down when it was launched on a rocket, 10,000 kilometres above Earth's surface. This is where the earths’ gravitational field is weaker. James Chin-Wen Chou from the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Colorado, led a team that used atomic clocks to show the effects of relativity. Thought experiments The time-slowing effects of gravity have been measured on smaller distances than 33 centimetres. In February, a team that included US Energy Secretary and Nobel prizewinning physicist Steven Chu reported seeing these effects when the difference in height between two objects was just 0.1 millimetre. It showed that waves at different heights oscillate at different frequencies due to gravitational time stretching. In Theta Healing Academy courses you too can learn how to change your beliefs and ‘bend’ time. But the new results by Chou's team represent the first time that atomic clocks have been used to show the gravitational effect over such small distances and the velocity effect at such small speeds. "When we learn relativity in school, clocks in different reference frames are usually introduced to illustrate the results of relativity," Chou says. "In that sense, this paper resembles more closely the thought experiments that teachers use to teach relativity." We know that thoughts change things. Your mind IS that powerful. Isn’t it time you mastered how to change your thoughts and beliefs now? When you want to live the life you love, when would now be a good time? Come and join us in Theta Healing Academy’s Basic course and experience these phenomenal changes for yourself. Yerba Mate Tea, checking e mails and then off for a walk with a friend through the gardens. It was a beautiful sunny fresh morning. We chatted, walked, looked at the flowers and laughed. I came home with nothing but the thoughts of a lovely breakfast, soft boiled eggs, delicious. Everything changed when I went to open my kitchen door. I saw my cats entranced by something behind the door I’d opened. Sneaking a peek I saw this tiny gorgeous little mouse behind the door, petrified for it’s life. As well it might be! Cute as they are (see pic) they’re lethal when they want to be. I kept the door jammed open but inaccessible to the cats (mouse hidden in corner behind door) and let what seemed like a tidal wave of thoughts move through my head in seconds. All these thoughts rushed through my head at once. Literally at the speed of light, a jumble of different scenarios of what to do. First off came the ‘oh it’s just nature, don’t interfere’. Then came the mother instinct to the dear sweet mouse, shouldn’t I try and rescue it? As soon as I thought that, panic set it. How on earth was I going to catch a mouse and keep it away from my cats at the same time. My head spun back to I can’t and it’s just nature, leave it alone. Thankfully the mouse’s cute face had stuck in my head and ashamed to say it, so had the idea of the ensuing mess that could happen. Entrails would be left all over my lovely carpet, gruesome I thought. Knowing my cats it occurred to me that they would torture the poor thing for hours and certainly this wasn’t ‘nature’ as they are a rather well fed pampered pair. They definitely didn’t need to eat this mouse. I still had this thought of ‘I can’t’. Truth is I could if I had to, but so much easier and more fun with help! Finally I got the idea to get my friend who happens to be a neighbour and ask her to help. Oh there was a light bulb moment. Why is it we think we have to do things all alone? I just knew she’d be great, she’s an animal lover and has rescued other animals and birds in distress. She came in, somehow managed to bring with her a plant pot (handy that) and some card from the hallway to place under it. I got the cats right out and locked them in a room. She talked sweetly to the mouse and got it and took it to a safer place outside and into the lovely gardens. So what do you do when you think something’s just natural? Is it just natural to hold onto beliefs of a lifetime because they have become part of you, or would you like to change them? I know only you can do it, and you can’t do it alone. Sometimes we just need a little helping hand with tricky beliefs and thoughts, just like I needed a hand with the mouse. At Theta Healing Academy we specialise in helping you change subconscious beliefs that have been holding you back from living the life you love. Check out our sessions page if you’d like some help.
