Have you heard people in spiritual work talk about dropping the ego? Or that something is coming from ego or heart? Let’s be clear on what an ego is as the word is banded around in nearly every therapy and healing modality on the planet. Ego means the self, the definition of a conscious person separate as an individual from everyone else. This is where the conflict can arise.
We are all individual unique, and we are all interconnected to everyone and everything else in existence. Our essence or spiritl knows this, experiences this in meditation and Theta Healing and in many other spiritual paths or self help techniques.
You want a good understanding of ego and why you have one? Here it is!
The ego is your challenger, it’s your competitor. Imagine a great actor or actress. For the sake of this discussion I’ll choose one. Al Pacino. Now imagine Al Pacino or some other actor you admire on stage alone giving a speech. This can be very interesting up to a point. You can admire him and his skill in holding your attention. Take it past 30 minutes and you may find your attention wandering despite his talent. Bring in a competitor, Jodie Foster. She’s skilled, talented and starts to bring the speech to life by interjection. All of a sudden you have a truly alive play and you’re gripped. Each actor inspires the other to get better as they work together.
That is essence and ego. You have an ego in order to challenge and inspire yourself to a better life , to help others or do your work in a better way. Whatever your spirit’s purpose is in life your ego can help or hinder you. Mostly it will help you as long as you don’t get stuck believing everything it has to say.
Ego’s tend to be non arrogant as they normally hold fear, self depreciation and obstacles for you to overcome. Now of course, if you bring your attention to your heart or feelings (essence or spirit) you can melt away some of these ego programmes and beliefs.
Whatever excuses we have in life for not living the best way we can for ourselves or loved ones comes from your competitor (ego). Every time you do better you are overcoming fears whilst not losing the individual essence you have for yourself in life. Every time you say you can’t, most likely it comes from the competitor inside. It’s time to master the self and nurture who you are.
Common competitor ego beliefs are
I can’t
Someone else has more than me
This belief is the only truth and better than anyone else’s.
My religion or way to god is the only truth
My way to enlightenment is the best
There is not enough
This person isn’t good enough
I once had a client have a tantrum because I didn’t hold the same beliefs of her. She held the belief of no free will or no free agency and everything’s predestined or fixed. When I told her it’s not part of my matrix of beliefs she started ‘throwing the toys out of her pram and attacking’. This was her ego, which felt threatened and became aggressive at being challenged. She felt in competition. The more she felt this, the more I laughed at it. I learnt to laugh at it and it helped inspire me to write this article.
Look out when you get angry, frustrated, jealous or feel like giving up, that is the competitor pushing you to overcome this and get back into your feelings and heart or Spirit essence.
